A well known mu­sic ed­u­cat­or, All­en was an or­gan schol­ar at Christ Coll­ege, Cam­bridge Un­i­ver­si­ty, and served as or­gan­ist at St. Asaph’s and Ely Ca­thed­ral (1898-1901) and New Coll­ege, Ox­ford Un­i­ver­si­ty (1901-18). He became conductor of the London Bach Choir in 1907, helped direct the Leeds Festival in 1913, became director of the Royal College of Music in 1918, and was knighted in 1920.
