Barnes studied with Harry B. Jepson and Horatio Parker at Yale University (1910-1911), then with Louis Verne, Vincent D’Indy and Abel Decaux in Paris. He went on to play the organ at Church of the Incarnation, New York (1911-1912); Rutgers Presbyterian Church, New York (1913-1924); St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1924-1938); and the First Presbyterian Church, Santa Monica, California (1938-). He was also a composer, producing organ symphonies, arrangements, and books of religious music, and served in the Naval Reserve during World War I. His works include:
