Barry was educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Cambridge, and in Cologne and Leipzig, Germany. He returned to London in 1858, and two years later was organist and choirmaster at Forest School, Leightonstone Hill. He is known as a composer of hymn tunes, cantatas, etc. and as the author of the Analytic Notes to the Crystal Palace, Philharmonic, Richter and Birmingham concerts.
