Brooke was ed­u­cat­ed at the Ci­ty of Lon­don School. Af­ter en­ter­ing com­mer­cial life, he be­came in­ter­est­ed in hymn­ol­o­gy, and learned much from Dan­i­el Sedg­wick. Orig­in­al­ly a Bap­tist, Brooke moved to the Church of Eng­land in 1867. His works in­clude:
