Caird was ed­u­cat­ed at King Ed­ward School, Birm­ing­ham; Pe­ter­house, Cam­bridge (1936-9); and Mans­field Col­lege, Ox­ford. He was min­is­ter of High­gate Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church, Lon­don (1943-6), then moved to Al­ber­ta, Ca­na­da in 1946 to be­come pro­fess­or of Old Tes­ta­ment at St. Ste­phens' Col­lege. In 1950, he be­came pro­fess­or of Bib­li­cal Stu­dies at Mc­Gill Un­i­ver­si­ty, Mont­ré­al. Re­turn­ing to Eng­land in 1959, he be­came Sen­ior Tu­tor at Mans­field Col­lege, Ox­ford.
