Caird was educated at King Edward School, Birmingham; Peterhouse, Cambridge (1936-9); and Mansfield College, Oxford. He was minister of Highgate Congregational Church, London (1943-6), then moved to Alberta, Canada in 1946 to become professor of Old Testament at St. Stephens' College. In 1950, he became professor of Biblical Studies at McGill University, Montréal. Returning to England in 1959, he became Senior Tutor at Mansfield College, Oxford. His works include:
