Died: Ap­ril 12, 1804, New­cas­tle-on-Tyne, Eng­land.

Son of George Carlyle, Joseph was ed­u­cat­ed first at Christchurch, then at Queen’s College, Cambridge (AB 1779, AM 1782, STB, 1793). He later served as a pro­fess­or of Arab­ic for five years there, and af­ter­wards Vi­car of New­cas­tle-on-Tyne. In 1799, he ac­com­pa­nied Thom­as Bruce, Earl of El­gin, to Con­stant­i­no­ple to ex­plore the trea­sures of the city’s pub­lic lib­rary; he event­u­al­ly ex­tend­ed his jour­ney in­to Asia Mi­nor and near­by is­lands. His hymns ap­peared in Psalms & Hymns, by J. Faw­cett (Car­lisle: 1802). His other works in­clude:
