Son of George Carlyle, Joseph was educated first at Christchurch, then at Queen’s College, Cambridge (AB 1779, AM 1782, STB, 1793). He later served as a professor of Arabic for five years there, and afterwards Vicar of Newcastle-on-Tyne. In 1799, he accompanied Thomas Bruce, Earl of Elgin, to Constantinople to explore the treasures of the city’s public library; he eventually extended his journey into Asia Minor and nearby islands. His hymns appeared in Psalms & Hymns, by J. Fawcett (Carlisle: 1802). His other works include:
