Carney be­gan writ­ing vers­es in ear­ly child­hood, con­trib­ut­ing po­ems to ju­ve­nile per­i­od­ic­als when she was on­ly four­teen. She be­gan teach­ing pri­ma­ry school in Bos­ton, Mass­a­chu­setts, in 1844. She mar­ried Rev. Thom­as J. Car­ney in 1849; she and her hus­band were mem­bers of the Un­i­ver­sal­ist Church.
