Carter at­tend­ed Christ’s Hos­pi­tal and Bal­li­ol Coll­ege, Ox­ford, then taught at Fren­sham Heights School. He served in a Quak­er am­bu­lance unit in World War II. Af­ter the war, he be­came a free­lance writ­er and broad­cast­er.
