Son of a teach­er, Char­ter­is at­tend­ed Ed­in­burgh Un­i­ver­si­ty (MA 1852, DD 1888, LLD 1898). He served as Pro­fess­or of Bib­li­cal Cri­ti­cism in Ed­in­burgh (1868-95), and Mod­er­a­tor of the Church of Scot­land in 1892.
