Dannström en­rolled in the Acad­e­my of Mu­sic at age 14, though his fa­ther want­ed him to work in bus­i­ness. How­ev­er, he was event­u­al­ly able to do fur­ther mu­sic stu­dy, and toured Ger­ma­ny, France and It­a­ly (1837-41). Af­ter re­turn­ing to Stock­holm, he dab­bled in the­a­ter, then be­came a mu­sic teach­er, and opened a pi­a­no shop in 1856.
