Daw was ed­u­cat­ed at Rice Un­i­ver­si­ty, Tex­as (BA 1966); the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Vir­gin­ia (MA 1967, PhD 1970), and was as­so­ci­ate pro­fess­or at the Coll­ege of Will­iam and Ma­ry, Vir­gin­ia (1970-8). He went on to the Un­i­ver­si­ty of the South, Se­wan­ee, Ten­nes­see (MDiv 1981), and was or­dained in 1982. He then served as As­sist­ant Rec­tor at Christ and Grace Church, Pe­ters­burg, Vir­gin­ia (1981-4); Vi­car-Chap­lain at St. Mark’s Cha­pel, Storrs, Con­nec­ti­cut (1984-93); and resident companion of the Community of Celebration in Aliquippa, Pennsylvania (1993-6). From 1980 to 1982, he was a mem­ber of the Stand­ing Com­miss­ion on Church Mu­sic for the 1982 Amer­i­can Epis­co­pal hym­nal, and, since 1996, has been Executive Director of The Hymn Society in the United States and Canada.
