Mary’s mo­ther died while she was an in­fant, and she was cared for by her grand­father and a Scotch nurse. In 1870, she mar­ried a Mr. Demarest; she spent most of her mar­ried life in Pas­sa­ic, New Jer­sey, un­til they moved to Pa­sa­de­na, Cal­i­for­nia, in hopes of re­stor­ing her fail­ing health.
