Døving em­i­grat­ed to Amer­i­ca in 1890, grad­u­at­ed from Lu­ther Sem­in­ary (1896) and Lu­ther Coll­ege, De­cor­ah, Io­wa (BA 1903). He served as pas­tor in Lu­theran church­es in Red Wing and Mon­te­video, Min­ne­sota, and Brook­lyn, New York, and was “ci­ty miss­ion­a­ry” to Chi­ca­go. He is best known as a trans­lat­or of Ger­man and Scan­din­av­i­an hymns; over 30 of his trans­la­tions ap­pear in the 1913 Lu­ther­an Hymn­a­ry.
