Son of Timothy Dwight, John was ed­u­cat­ed at Har­vard and the Cam­bridge The­o­lo­gic­al Coll­ege. He served as a pas­tor for six years, then de­vot­ed him­self to lit­er­ary work, ed­it­ing Dwight’s Jour­nal of Mu­sic for near­ly 30 years.
