Farmer com­posed or­a­tor­i­os, can­ta­tas, church mu­sic, cham­ber mu­sic and ma­ny school songs, es­pe­cial­ly for Har­row, where he was mu­sic mas­ter for ma­ny years. One of his best known se­cu­lar com­po­si­tions is “For­ty Years On,” which he wrote at Har­row in 1872. Farmer al­so played the or­gan at Bal­li­ol Coll­ege, Ox­ford, and found­ed the Ball­i­ol Con­certs. His works in­clude:
