Educated at Ball­i­ol Coll­ege, Ox­ford, served as As­sist­ant Mas­ter at Rug­by (1894-1903), Mas­ter of Marl­bo­rough Coll­ege (1903-11) (the first lay­man to hold that post), and Head­mas­ter of the Char­ter­house School, in God­alm­ing, Eng­land (1911-35). He was knighted for his distinguished career.
