Ganse’s family moved to New York City in 1825. He graduated from Columbia College in 1839, studied theology at New Brunswick (Reformed Dutch) Seminary, New Jersey, and was ordained in 1843. From 1843-1856 he was a Reformed Dutch pastor in Freehold, New Jersey. From 1856-1866 he pastored at the Northwest Reformed Dutch Church in New York. On January 1, 1876, he became pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Louis. Upon the organization of the Presbyterian Board of Aid for Colleges and Academies in 1883, Ganse was elected its secretary, and moved to Chicago, Illinois, to perform those duties.
