A com­pos­er, Gas­toldi was in the cha­pel of the Gon­za­ga fam­i­ly in Man­tua, event­u­al­ly as maes­tro di ca­pel­la (1572-1608), then prob­ab­ly moved to Mi­lan. Most in­flu­en­tial are his bal­let­ti, stro­phic vo­cal dance-songs with pass­ages of non­sense syl­la­bles. These were oft­en re­print­ed and much im­i­tat­ed, as by Clau­dio Mon­te­ver­di and Thom­as Mor­ley. His works in­clude:
