Son of George Garrett, Master of the Choristers at Winchester Cathedral, Garrett started his musical career as a chorister at New College, Oxford (1844-1848) under Stephen Elvey. He was a pupil (1847-1854) and assistant (1851-1854) to Samuel Wesley, and earned several degrees from the University of Cambridge: (MusB 1857, MusD 1867, MA 1878). He served as organist at St. Thomas (from 1848) and Holy Trinity (from 1852), Winchester; Madras Cathedral, India (1854-1857); and St. John’s College, Cambridge (1856-1897). At the University of Cambridge, he succeeded J. L. Hopkins as organist (from 1873), and lectured in harmony and counterpoint (from 1883).
