Son of George Gar­rett, Mas­ter of the Chor­is­ters at Win­ches­ter Ca­thed­ral, Gar­rett start­ed his mu­sic­al ca­reer as a chor­is­ter at New Coll­ege, Ox­ford (1844-1848) un­der Ste­phen El­vey. He was a pu­pil (1847-1854) and as­sist­ant (1851-1854) to Sam­u­el Wes­ley, and earned sev­er­al de­grees from the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Cam­bridge: (MusB 1857, MusD 1867, MA 1878). He served as or­gan­ist at St. Thom­as (from 1848) and Ho­ly Trin­i­ty (from 1852), Win­ches­ter; Ma­dras Ca­thed­ral, In­dia (1854-1857); and St. John’s Coll­ege, Cam­bridge (1856-1897). At the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Cam­bridge, he suc­ceed­ed J. L. Hop­kins as or­gan­ist (from 1873), and lec­tured in har­mo­ny and coun­ter­point (from 1883).
