Gaskell was pas­tor of the Cross Street Cha­pel in Man­ches­ter, Eng­land, for over five de­cades. Among other things, he tu­tored girls who could not get an ed­u­cation else­where; Cath­er­ine Wink­worth was among his stu­dents.
