Gilkey grad­u­at­ed from Har­vard Coll­ege (1912) and Un­ion The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­a­ry. He was a teach­er and chap­lain at Am­herst Coll­ege, then, start­ing in 1917, pas­tored at the South Con­gre­ga­tion­al Church, Spring­field, Mass­a­chu­setts, un­til re­tir­ing in 1954.
