Raised in the Con­gre­ga­tion­al­ist de­nom­in­a­tion, Gil­man was one of the found­ers of the So­ci­e­ty of Friends in Eng­land in 1916, and the Hymn So­ci­e­ty of Eng­land. He al­so helped ed­it the Friends’ Fel­low­ship Hymn-Book in 1909 and 1933. His works in­clude:
