Gray at­tend­ed St. Pe­ter’s School in York, and Trin­i­ty Coll­ege at Cam­bridge Un­i­ver­si­ty (LLB, LM, MusB, MusD). He served as Di­rect­or of Mu­sic for Well­ing­ton Coll­ege (1883-92) and or­gan­ist at Trin­i­ty Coll­ege un­til re­tir­ing in 1912. He is known for com­pos­ing can­ta­tas and or­gan piec­es. His works in­clude:
