Hamontree grad­u­at­ed from Ma­ry­ville Coll­ege, near Green­back, Ten­nes­see, in 1909, taught for while, then stu­died at Moo­dy Bi­ble In­sti­tute, Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois. In World War I, he toured ar­my camps with evan­gel­ist Mel Trot­ter; he worked with Trot­ter for al­most 20 years there­af­ter, and with Bil­ly Sun­day and Ho­mer Ro­de­heav­er. He went on to di­rect the Moo­dy Bi­ble In­sti­tute mu­sic de­part­ment (1936-1942), and tour ar­my camps once again in World War II. Fol­low­ing the war, he worked with min­is­ters such as Paul Beck­with and Howard Her­man­sen.
