Educated at Bay­lor Un­i­ver­si­ty (BA) and South­west­ern Bap­tist The­o­lo­gi­cal Sem­in­a­ry (MDiv), Hanks al­so re­ceived hon­or­a­ry doc­tor­ate de­grees from Cal­i­for­nia Bap­tist Un­i­ver­si­ty in Ri­ver­side, Cal­i­for­nia, and South­west Bap­tist Un­i­ver­si­ty in Bol­i­var, Mis­sou­ri. He has worked in the evan­gel­ism field most of his adult life, re­ceiv­ing the Stella Ross award for evan­gel­ism, work­ing with the Bil­ly Gra­ham Evan­gel­is­tic As­so­ci­a­tion, and found­ing the In­ter­na­tion­al Evang­el­ism As­so­ci­a­tion of Fort Worth, Texas, and Op­er­a­tion Mul­ti­pli­ca­tion.
