Idle was ed­u­cat­ed at El­than Coll­ege; St. Pe­ter’s Coll­ege, Ox­ford (BA 1962); and Clif­ton The­o­lo­gi­cal Coll­ege, Bris­tol. An Ang­li­can cler­ic, he was a cur­ate in Lan­ca­shire and Lon­don, and in 1971 be­came priest-in-charge at St. Mat­thi­as’ Church, Pop­lar, Lon­don. He con­trib­ut­ed num­er­ous ar­ti­cles to ma­ga­zines and news­pa­pers.
