Ireland at­tend­ed the Roya­l Coll­ege of Mu­sic (RCM), stu­dy­ing un­der Charles Stan­ford. He be­gan play­ing the or­gan at Ho­ly Trin­i­ty Church in Sloane Street around 1896, and at St. Luke’s Church, Chel­sea, in 1904. He lived in Chel­sea, and taught com­po­si­tion at the RCM. He had large num­ber of com­po­si­tions, in­clud­ing pi­a­no so­los, string so­na­tas, cham­ber en­sem­bles, vo­cal and chor­al piec­es, and or­ches­tral works.
