Son of W. F. D. Jervois (later a lieutenant general), William was educated at Rugby and at Trinity College, Oxford (BA 1876, MA 1878), and was ordained D. 1878, P. 1879. He became Vicar of St. Mary Magdalene, Munster Square, London, in 1896. Until his death, he was a member of the committee that compiled The English Hymnal of 1906.
