Johnson worked for the Sal­va­tion Army (SA) in Scot­land and in Lon­don. A sing­er and vi­o­lin­ist, some of his songs ap­peared in the SA’s War Cry and Mu­sic­al Sal­va­tion­ist, 1882-1887.
