Jones’ fa­ther was mu­si­cian Ab­ner Jones. In 1854, Dar­i­us and George J. Webb be­came as­sist­ant ed­it­ors with Low­ell Ma­son, work­ing on the per­i­od­ic­al The Chor­al Ad­vo­cate. At the time, Jones was mu­sic di­rect­or at Ply­mouth Church in Brook­lyn (John Zun­del was then or­gan­ist). Jones lat­er ed­it­ed the Con­gre­ga­tion­al Her­ald in Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois. Lat­er, he grad­u­at­ed from Io­wa Coll­ege and pas­tored in Co­lum­bus Ci­ty and New­ton Cen­ter, Io­wa. In 1863, he be­came trea­sur­er of the Io­wa Gen­er­al As­so­ci­a­tion, and af­ter­ward worked for the Amer­i­can Bi­ble As­so­ci­a­tion. His works in­clude:
