Son of the Rev. Phil­ip Jones of Chel­ten­ham, Ed­mund spent much of his boy­hood in Up­ton-on-Se­vern, Wor­ces­ter­shire, where his fa­ther pas­tored a Bap­tist church. He at­tend­ed for a time the Bap­tist Coll­ege at Bris­tol. At age 19, he be­gan to preach for the Bap­tist con­gre­ga­tion in Ex­e­ter, and two years lat­er be­came its pas­tor. It seems his church first in­tro­duced sing­ing as part of wor­ship in 1759, dur­ing his ten­ure. Ac­cord­ing to John Rip­pon, Jones al­so pa­stored at the Bap­tist church in Ex­on, De­von.
