Knox was educated at the parish school, and at the grammar school in Musselburgh. For some time, he worked in farming at Wrae (near Langholm), Dumfrieshire. He left Wrae in 1817, finally settling in Edinburgh in 1820, where he contributed to public journals. His works include:
