A Cam­bridge Un­i­ver­si­ty grad­u­ate, Mac­al­is­ter’s pass­ion was ar­chae­ol­o­gy. He was a con­trib­ut­or to the Jour­nal of the Roy­al So­ci­e­ty of An­ti­quar­ies of Ire­land, and di­rect­ed digs for the Pa­les­tine Ex­ca­va­tion Fund (1900-9, 1923-4). He al­so played the or­gan and di­rect­ed the choir at the Ad­e­laide Road Pres­by­ter­i­an Church in Dub­lin, and served on the com­mit­tee that re­vised Scot­land’s The Church Hymn­o­dy.
