Newhall at­tend­ed Am­herst Coll­ege and Un­ion The­o­lo­gic­al Sem­in­a­ry, and was or­dained a Con­gre­ga­tion­al min­is­ter. He pas­tored over 25 years, then be­came as­so­ci­at­ed with the Unit­ed States For­es­try Ser­vice and de­vel­oped a rep­u­ta­tion as an out­stand­ing na­tur­al­ist. He re­tired in 1905 to Ber­ke­ley, Cal­i­forn­ia.
