Daughter of a phy­si­cian, Amel­ia marr­ied paint­er John Opie in May 1798. Orig­in­al­ly she was a Un­i­tar­i­an, but in 1814 joined the So­ci­e­ty of Friends (Quak­ers). She lived most of the rest of her life in Cas­tle Mea­dow, Nor­wich. Her works in­clude:
