Peterson was ed­u­cat­ed at Au­gus­ta­na Col­lege, Rock Is­land, Il­li­nois (BS 1889, master’s de­gree lat­er) and Har­vard Un­i­ver­si­ty. He served as pro­fes­sor of phys­ics and chem­is­try at Au­gus­ta­na Col­lege for 16 years, be­gin­ning in 1890. In 1906, he joined the Rock Is­land Tro­pic­al Plan­ta­tion Com­pa­ny, and man­aged a Mex­i­can rub­ber plant­a­tion. Af­ter the ven­ture fold­ed due to po­lit­ic­al in­sta­bil­i­ty in Mex­i­co, he went in­to real es­tate and in­sur­ance. He be­came head of the chem­istry de­part­ment of Hur­on Col­lege, South Da­ko­ta, in 1920, and re­tired in 1928.
