A leader of Swed­ish Luther­an­ism, Olav­us and his bro­ther Lau­rent­ius stu­died at Wit­tenberg, Ger­ma­ny, and were in­flu­enced by Mar­tin Lu­ther. Af­ter Swe­den re­ceived in­de­pend­ence from Den­mark, King Gus­ta­vus Va­sa made Ola­vus a pas­tor and ci­ty coun­cil­man in Stock­holm. How­ev­er, the king want­ed to con­trol the church, and was of­ten in con­flict with Pe­tri; the king ev­en went so far as to con­demn Pe­tri to death, but lat­er par­doned him. Petri’s works in­clude Swed­ish trans­la­tions of the New Test­a­ment and the La­tin mass, and a ca­te­chism.
