A leader of Swedish Lutheranism, Olavus and his brother Laurentius studied at Wittenberg, Germany, and were influenced by Martin Luther. After Sweden received independence from Denmark, King Gustavus Vasa made Olavus a pastor and city councilman in Stockholm. However, the king wanted to control the church, and was often in conflict with Petri; the king even went so far as to condemn Petri to death, but later pardoned him. Petri’s works include Swedish translations of the New Testament and the Latin mass, and a catechism.
