Died: June 11, 1908, Shel­by Coun­ty, Il­li­nois.

Buried: Wal­nut Hill Cem­e­tery, Shel­by Coun­ty, Il­li­nois.

Pontius was a farm­er, jus­tice of the peace, and, in his ear­ly years, a band lead­er and held “sing­ing schools.” He was al­so a ser­geant in the Amer­i­can ci­vil war, serv­ing in the 58th Ohio Vol­un­teer In­fan­try at the Bat­tles of Shi­loh and Vicks­burg. He was ac­tive in the Unit­ed Breth­ren church most of his life.
