Educated at Christ’s Col­lege, Cam­bridge (BA 1844), Pur­chas served as Cur­ate of Els­worth, Cam­bridge­shire (1851–3); of Or­well, Cam­bridge­shire (1856–9); of St. Paul’s, Bright­on (1861–6); and Per­pe­tu­al Cur­ate of St. James’ Chapel, Bright­on (1866).
