Rankin grad­u­at­ed from Prince­ton Un­i­ver­si­ty (AB 1873, AM 1876) and Un­ion The­o­lo­gi­cal Sem­in­a­ry (BD 1877), and was li­ter­a­ry ed­it­or of The Con­gre­ga­tion­al­ist in Bos­ton, Mass­a­chu­setts.
