After graduating in 1861 from Luther College, Rygh attended Luther Seminary and Capital University for two years, and taught at Luther Seminary in 1883. He went on to serve as pastor in Portland Maine (1884); teacher at Wittenberg Academy (1889-90); pastor in Grand Forks, North Dakota (1890-1); teacher at North Dakota University (1891-5) and Mount Horeb, Wisconsin (1895-8); pastor in Chicago, Illinois (1899-1910); teacher at St. Olaf College (1910-13); and pastor in Minneapolis, Minnesota (1920-30). He also edited the United Lutheran (1909-14), the American Lutheran Survey (1914-21) and the Lutheran Herald (from 1925).
