Son of Vi­car Al­fred Gat­ty of Ec­cles­field, Al­fred as­sumed his mo­ther’s maid­en name, Scott, in 1892. He at­tend­ed Marl­bo­rough and Christ’s Coll­ege, Cam­bridge, achieved some fame in the field of her­ald­ry (Rouge Dra­gon 1880, York Herald of the Coll­ege of Arms, 1886-1904), and was knight­ed in 1904.
