Son of Dr. Smyt­tan of the Bom­bay Me­di­cal Board, Smyt­tan was ed­u­cat­ed at Cor­pus Christi Coll­ege, Cam­bridge (BA 1845). He took Ho­ly Or­ders in 1848, and served as Rec­tor of Hawks­worth, Not­ting­ham­shire, Eng­land (1850-1859). His works in­clude:
