Stanley at­tend­ed Rug­by and Bal­li­ol Coll­ege, Ox­ford. He served as Re­gi­us Pro­fes­sor of Ec­cles­i­as­ti­cal His­to­ry and Ca­non of Christ Church, Ox­ford (1856-1864), and as Dean of West­min­ster (1864-1881). His works in­clude:
