Died: Sep­tem­ber 18, 1844, Vent­nor, Isle of Wight.

Sterling at­tend­ed Cam­bridge and went on to a ca­reer as au­thor and cri­tic. In 1828, he and F. D. Mau­rice bought the Athen­a­cum, but kept the pub­li­ca­tion on­ly six months. Ster­ling’s works in­clude:

Julius Hare ed­it­ed Ster­ling’s works in 1848, and Carlyle wrote a bi­o­gra­phy of him in 1851.
