Tappan was a clock maker, pas­tor, and evan­gel­ist. In 1822, he be­came Su­per­in­tend­ent of the Amer­i­can Sun­day School Un­ion. In 1849, he was or­dained as a Congrega­tional min­is­ter. His works in­clude:
