Thom was ed­u­cat­ed at Mont­rose Acad­e­my, the Un­i­ver­si­ty of Ed­in­burgh, and the Eng­lish Pres­by­ter­i­an Coll­ege in Lon­don. He was or­dained at Christ Church in Ex­e­ter (1861), and served in Wor­ces­ter (1864); St. Da­vid’s, Glas­gow (1869); and at the Free High Church, Kil­mar­nock, Scot­land (1876). He re­tired in Sep­tem­ber 1900, and as of 1916 lived on Vic­tor­ia Drive in Troon, Scot­land. His works in­clude:
