Son of George Trout­beck of Dacre, Cum­be­rland, John was ed­u­cat­ed at Rug­by and Un­i­ver­si­ty Coll­ege at Ox­ford Un­i­ver­si­ty (BA 1856, MA 1858, DD 1883), and was or­dained in 1855. He served as pre­cen­tor of Man­ches­ter Ca­thed­ral, Chap­lain and Priest in Or­din­ary to Queen Vic­tor­ia, and Sec­re­ta­ry to th New Test­a­ment Re­vi­sion Com­pa­ny (1870-1881). He trans­lated a num­ber of Ger­man, French, and Ital­ian op­era and or­a­tor­io texts, in­clud­ing ones from Bach. His works in­clude:
