A philosopher, psychologist, pacifist, poet, author, and educator, Upham was educated at Dartmouth College (1819) and Andover Theological Seminary (1821).
He pastored at the Congregational Church in Rochester, New Hampshire (1823-1825), and served as a Professor of Moral and Mental Philosophy at Bowdoin College, Maine (1825-1867). He was also associated with the holiness movement. His works include:
