Daughter of Quak­er min­is­ter Da­vid Brain­ard Up­de­graff and Eli­za Jane Mitch­ell, Grace went by her mid­dle name to dis­tin­guish her­self from her m­other. A sing­er, pi­a­no play­er and com­pos­er, she col­lab­o­rat­ed with Kel­so Car­ter in the 1890’s. In 1906, she mar­ried Re­formed Church min­is­ter John Tall­madge Ber­gen in Ma­di­son, Wis­con­sin; he died in 1948. Af­ter her death in 1964, her daugh­ter and hus­band set up a schol­ar­ship in her mem­o­ry at Lake For­est Coll­ege, Chi­ca­go, Il­li­nois.
